On June 10th, 2010, the Erire County Clerk’s Office gave recognition to Major Henry Williams with the Daniel Acker Community Service Award.

Young Entrepreneur Training

This Summer, MicroBiz Buffalo, Inc. will be offering programming to youth to interest them in the possibility of a career as an entrepreneur.   As part of our work, they are planning to offer our youth training program — NNW: The Promise of Youth Enterprise — to youth already receiving athletic training in Delaware Park.  During the first year of the program, they provided tennis training, lunch and financial literacy training.  In the coming months, they will be solidifying dates, times, a place in the park and fine tuning the program.

Black women’s group honors 8 at luncheon

Eight people who have excelled in education, business and community service were honored when the Buffalo Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs held its 50th annual Sojourner Truth Award and Founder’s Day Luncheon on Sunday in the Hearthstone Manor, Depew.

Maj. Henry S. Williams Jr. received the Man of the Year Award. Williams retired after working 30 years as a lab technician at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, 30 years as a senior biochemistry technician with Erie County Medical Center and 20 years in the Army Reserve. He has recived the Black Achievers in Industry Award, a Congressional Recognition Award and other honors.

Major Henry Williams has been selected to receive the 2010 Man of the Year Award from the Buffalo Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club’s, Inc.  He will be presented with the award at the annual Sojourner Truth Awards and Founder Dave Luncheon in May.

Kendell McFayden has signed a three-year contract to play professional soccer with the Austin Aztecs.  Kendell will begin his soccer career starting in May 2000.  Please keep Kendell and the McFayden family in your thoughts and prayers.  Kendell is a senior majoring in criminal justice at Medaille college.

Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic Victory

Naomi Mitchell of Norfork Virginia (c) celebrates her Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic championship victory with the second-place finisher Zora Gittens of Parkland Florida, and Latanna Stone of Parkland Florida (r), who took home the third-place trophy.

Mitchell, nine, won the girls’ age 8-9 competition.  In a rain shortened nine-hole tournament Mitchell’s shot two under 33 to win the tournament by three strokes.  This is Mitchell’s second win in this event in the past three years at the premiere tournament.over 680 junior golfers from around the world participate in this competition every year.  Mitchell is looking to defend her title in her next tournament, the US Kids Golf Regional Championships Jekyll Island Cup in Georgia, on Valentine’s Day.  It is believed she will be the first and youngest African-American player to win three in a row.
